Powder coating is a fantastic way to make metal durable, stylish, and, above all, resilient. Perfect for our chain collars and wire muzzles, however. However, not all colors hold up equally well. Especially with chain collars and muzzles, it's noticeable that standard colors are usually much more resilient than metallic or neon colors . But why is that? 🤔
Color composition: What makes standard colors more robust?
The durability of a powder coating depends heavily on the pigments used:
✅ Standard colors contain dense, durable pigments that are more resistant to mechanical abrasion and UV radiation.
⚠️ Metallic paints contain metal particles that can more easily detach from the coating, especially at rubbing points.
⚠️ Neon colors consist of fluorescent pigments, which are often less abrasion-resistant and fade more quickly.
Of course, choosing a high-quality powder also plays a key role. A professional kiln also ensures proper curing—any mistakes here can compromise the durability.
We often receive messages from customers who were dissatisfied with other shops, and the chains don't look good after a short period of time. This could be one reason, for example. But even if you pay attention to the highest quality powder paints and prepare the materials with the best possible care, wear and tear is inevitable, especially with certain colors.
Friction & coating thickness: Why does the paint wear off?
Chain collars, in particular, experience constant friction between the links . This gradually wears away the paint layer in those areas. Muzzles also experience a lot of contact with various surfaces – whether through playing, carrying, or storage.
An additional factor: Due to the powder coating process, little to no powder often gets between the links. This creates a particularly thin layer of paint during firing, which wears off more quickly. Wear in such areas is therefore absolutely unavoidable.
👎 Bright, neon, and metallic colors are particularly susceptible to abrasion. 👍 Standard colors last longer because they have a uniform, solid pigment structure .
Tips for extending shelf life
✅ Choose standard colors if durability is most important to you.
✅ If you love metallic or neon colors, be aware that they can wear out faster.
✅ Take good care of your coated products: Gentle cleaning without harsh chemicals helps to keep the colors fresher for longer and removes impurities between links, for example, to minimize friction.
Standard colors for maximum durability! 🏆
Standard colors are simply the best choice when it comes to durable powder coating . However, if you opt for bright neon or elegant metallic colors, be aware that these will wear out more quickly. With proper care, however, you can still enjoy your colored chain collar or muzzle for a long time! 😊🎨🐶
If you use your dog's chain a lot, use a leash, or drag your muzzle across the asphalt for sniffing, you'll generally get wear and tear quickly, regardless of the color :)
